Background of the Study
Forced displacement due to flooding has profound psychological repercussions on affected communities. In Patani, flood victims face not only material loss but also severe emotional and psychological distress. The sudden disruption of lives, loss of property, and the breakdown of community networks contribute to long-lasting mental health issues (Ighodaro, 2023). Studies indicate that forced displacement is closely linked with increased incidences of anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (Uche, 2024). Furthermore, the inadequacy of governmental support and limited access to mental health services exacerbate these conditions (Eze, 2025). This study aims to assess the psychological effects of forced displacement among flood victims in Patani by exploring the interplay between traumatic experiences, loss of social capital, and the subsequent mental health challenges. The research seeks to provide insights into the coping mechanisms employed by displaced individuals and to suggest policy interventions that could mitigate the adverse psychological impacts of natural disasters.
Statement of the Problem
Flood-induced forced displacement in Patani has resulted in significant psychological distress among affected individuals. The disruption of normal life, loss of homes, and diminished community support have led to elevated levels of anxiety and depression. Despite relief efforts, there is a paucity of mental health interventions to address the trauma associated with displacement. The lack of targeted support services leaves flood victims vulnerable to long-term psychological impairments. This study seeks to identify and analyze these challenges, emphasizing the urgent need for comprehensive mental health support mechanisms (Ighodaro, 2023).
